Anime: Sword Art Online – Episode 22 Summary + Review

“Awkward triangles are a must

(This is a NO FLY zone!)

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre: Game, MMO, Fantasy, Sc-Fi, Age: 13+

Released: 6th July 2012 – onwards

From the previous episode, at the base of the World Tree, Yui notices that Asuna’s player co-ordinates are directly above. Spurred on by that thought, Kirito tries to fly directly to the top of the tree. He cannot succeed because of the barrier that prevents players from flying up that high. Leafa eventually manages to pull him back to the ground.

Warning! May contain spoilers!

After a warning message from Yui to Asuna, a pass card comes floating down the World Tree. Kirito catches it and realises that Asuna must know that he and Yui are at the base of the tree.

(Epic triangle bro-fist!)

Kirito decides to take the Guardians of the World Tree. They prove a tough bunch and Kirito is eventually killed after a drawn out battle.

(“Take that! And that! And this!”)

As he contemplates his fate, he realises that Leafa has jumped into the battle with the Guardians. She is injured badly, but manages to escape the dungeon before she is also killed. Outside she revives Kirito.

(Leafa rescues a guy who has no clue)

Although Kirito is grateful for the revival, he will still fight the Guardians again. Leafa struggles to understand why reaching the top of the World Tree is so important.

(“Well… actually I wanted to tell you something but… don’t laugh…”)

Kirito mentions that ‘Asuna’ is at the top of the Tree. Leafa connects her brother’s feelings for Asuna in the hospital with the Kirito-avatar that she has feelings for, and realises that they are the same person! Kirito also realises that Leafa is his younger sister.

(“O. M. G. I almost things even more awkward!”)

Suguha logs out of Alfheim, and confesses her feelings to her adopted brother in the real world. She faces rejection again, and is left to console her own feeling after shutting Kirito out.

(“Come back when you admit we not related.”)

Overall, I’m really glad that the awkward triangle of Asuna-Kirito-Suguha has come to light. It has been festering uncomfortably for a while. Now Suguha has broken down, and will probably move on from her feelings for Kirito. The series and its lead couple can move on, as well.

It is intriguing, how Suguha has never considered Kirito her real brother, from the moment she found out he was adopted. Is there some rule in anime that completely overrides all platonic feelings for your sibling, regardless of whether or not the character is adopted?

Really hoping for a wrap-up, and not one where Suguha retorts by being a nasty person.

Rated – 3/5 Getting warmed up for more battles.
