Let’s have a drink”

(“Try and feel the your fairy-wing muscles. They exist, really!”)

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre: Game, MMO, Fantasy, Sc-Fi, Age: 13+

Released: 6th July 2012 – onwards

From the previous episode, Kirito meets the charismatic Leafa in a forest in Alfheim Online. As thanks for rescuing her from player killers, Leafa agrees to be his guide for a short while. First, are the tutorials on how to fly.

Warning! May contain spoilers!

The pair land in a Sylvein, a Sylph town. Although the Spriggan race that Kirito chose doesn’t get along with the Sylph race, Kirito counts on his high stats to protect him.

(The NPC interaction tutorial was brutal)

Kirito and Leafa take a drink at the pub where Leafa explains the small chance of anyone completing the higher levels of the game. It requires one race to give up the bounty to the other, and giving them the the advantage to fly eternally.

With heavy competition between the races, and no chance of collaboration, it looks like the top of the tree will remain a mystery.

(If any food here is *real* food, then this could potentially end world hunger!)

Leafa feels sorry for Kirito and agrees to help out with his quest to get to the top of the tree. The two agree to meet later.

When Leafa logs out, it is revealed that it is Suguha, Kirito’s real-life sister, who is enthralled by Kirito’s online persona. However, she has no way of knowing that Kirito is her brother, because his real name is different to his online name.

(Tutorial: How to Make Plans with Relative Strangers. 1. Agree to everything they say.)

Asuna is being help captive at the top of the tree. Suguo, Asuna’s supposed fiance, is one of the admins for Alfheim. He insists on playing with their persona as the King and Queen of the Fairies.

When Asuna is less than enthusiastic, he threatens to remove her memories. It is also revealed that Alfheim Online is a large experiment with hundreds of test subjects.

Overall, the story quality just dips in this episode. If you’re a fan of watching character go through a game tutorials, for a game that you will never play, then this might be riveting. For others, this will be a dragged out info dump, which conveys the story really poorly.

Kirito is already been given the ultimate quest in the game; get to the top of the tree, and rescue Asuna. It just seems to be taking a long time for him to get anywhere.

The side-arc with Leafa not knowing that Kirito is her brother, and falling in love with him… I’m sorry? Have the writers just ripped that off some cheesy European drama? Considering Kirito is “destined” to be with Asuna, plus the whole incest angle, it makes for fruitless screen-time.

Suguo proves that he’s willing to rape body and mind with his mannerisms at the end. Are there no other potential rescuers for Asuna? And shouldn’t she also have her own statistics from Sword Art? She was very strong before, so why can’t she break herself out?

I’m slowly losing faith in this series….

….and I really hates elf ears.

Rated – 2.5/5 dragged out info dumps. Few character interactions.
