Anime: Natsuyuki Rendezvous – Episode 9 Summary + Review

“Dun Dun DUN!”

(Atsushi’s soul-less eyes will win every staring contest..)

Studio: Dogakobo

Genre: Romance, Paranormal, Josei, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, Rokka is following Hazuki after his strange behaviour. Reminiscing about a time when she and Atsushi climbed the same mountain. Atsushi’s health didn’t allow him to do anything more than just walking.

Warning! May contain Spoilers!

Rokka tells Atsushi about kind-looking trees, that let people climb them. It was something that her mother and school taught her.

Atsushi can’t relate to it, because of his poor health he wasn’t able to attend P.E, but he can understand.

(Rokka’s school made students compete against actual monkeys)

After jumping into oblivion, Hazuki lands back into the sketchbook. This time, the story is Snow White and the seven dwarfs.

(Dwarfmen taking a sleeping girl deeper ino the woods. Totally not weird…)

Hazuki attempts to play the prince, by trying to wake up the sleeping Rokka with a kiss, however, she wakes up by herself, and tells him clearly that’s he is not the prince.

(It’s easier to fantasize about Rokka now that she’s full-size)

In the real world, Rokka catches up to Atsushi-as-Hazuki. He’s planting the plant at the foot of a kind-looking tree. Rokka recognises this strange behavior, and notices that he’s using her husband’s tool.

(Rokka-stalker-mode: activate!)

Being suspicious, she calls him Atsushi, and Atsushi attempt to run away. Definitely sure that something strange is going on, she follows him.

He has the same strange running style that Atsushi has, due to his illness and time spent in hospital beds.

(Rokka runs to catch the conga line)

Catching up to the silent Atsushi, Rokka recognises him as her late husband. Although she doesn’t know what has happened, she is surprised, and shocked.

(Atsushi didn’t fake his death, he just came back to life. It’s believable.)

Rokka breaks down in tears when Atsushi finally confirms that he’s Atsushi.

(“I will kill you for dying and coming back to life…”)

In the sketchbook world, Hazuki’s appearance changes to Atsushi’s as he takes the Prince’s place.

(Other worlds can change a person, in more than one way)

Overall, this episode is filled with long silences, and minimal actions. Rokka may have finally found out that Atsushi has come back, however her immediate reaction is crying.

Hazuki is struggling with the boring sketchbook world, and his struggle to escape it is now even more tough. I was hoping that Hazuki would finally reach home, and was very disappointing that it’s another fairytale. now that’s he’s taken Atsushi’s place, it’s going to be even more annoying. I’m predicting even more episodes of struggling to answer questions.

Rated – 3/5 Slow episode. However, Atsushi is finally revealed.
