Anime: Binbougami ga! – Episode 9 Summary + Review

“Of Tennis Matches and Toads”

(King Kong had to shave and get an education after civilising)

Studio: Sunrise

Genre: Surreal, Drama, Fantasy, Comedy, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, an epic tennis match between Sakura and Momiji begins at school. Momiji grabs Gurahara, a gorilla-man-boy, for her partner.

This episode contains material not suitable for younger viewers!

Sakura gets to partner with the best tennis player in the school, called Prince.

(Sakura’s hand is crushed by Prince’s tennis squeeze…!)

Then, the strangest tennis match ever gets underway.

(The coach said tennis not circus!)

Both Momiji and Sakura reach the last set. Getting serious, Sakura’s fortune summons a gale to hide her magic from the rest of the P.E class. She summons her army of fortune creatures against Momiji.

(Thwacking spirits instead of tennis balls)

In the end, the entire tennis court gets blown away.

(Momiji used self-destruct for automatic win)

The second half of the episode, is about a new God of Misfortune that comes in the hope of beating both Sakura and Momiji. Kuroyuri has a rivalry with Momiji and would love to show her up.

(“So… you want a new character to cosplay? I can help…”)

Sakura’s learning to cook, with Sawano’s advice to eat more than just takeaway meals.

(Sakura looks in horror at the mutated filth she’s created)

Kuroyuri gets caught up in the war between Momiji and Sakura, when they both have a cooking contest. While Momiji’s dish looks tasty, Sakura’s looks barely edible.

(It’s not a difficult choice of which to eat…)

Not even Sakura’s fortune can teach her ho to be a good cook, and Kuroyuri’s life is in danger when she takes a bite.

(“Why do I feel like I’m on death-row?”)

Defeated, she returns to the Gods’ Realm, admitting that Momiji is doing fine just as she is.

(Kuroyuri died later after stomach pains…)

Overall, although the two halves of the episodes weren’t connected, they were still fun to watch. It mainly concentrated on zany antics and random attacks.

The side-characters were really funny. Kuroyuri is a hilarious match for Momiji, and even has her own toad teddy. Gurahara was good too.

Rated – 3/5 Good fun, though bit disjointed.
