Anime: Jinrui wa Suitai Shimashita (Mankind has Declined) – Episode 9 Summary + Review

“How much attention have you given to survival shows lately?”

(Deploy the tiny fairy-sized lifeboats and vests!)

Studio: AIC A.S.T.A

Genre: Surreal, Drama, Fantasy, Comedy, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, the Mediator is given the task to transport some fairies to lesser populated areas. On the way to a remote location, she and the fairies accidentally break off the mainland and reach an island.

With no-one to realise the Mediator is missing, it looks like she’ll be stuck by herself for a while, with just the fairies for company…

Warning! May contain spoilers!

The fairies do have magic, however. In the search for some home comforts, she asks the fairies to somehow get them home. They’re down in the dumps, but want to create a new nation, with the Mediator as their queen.

(Click the shoes three times, and wish “There’s no place like home…?”)

The first night is spent on an uncomfortable bed, but the Mediator finds herself on the inside of a house that’s in the process of being built.

(How to feel claustrophobic on a deserted island, with plenty of space)

It turns out that the fairies have been busy using agriculture and plumbing on the island. They’re pleased with their world, and the ever-expanding community that the buzz is providing.

(“All hail the giant lady that will feed us!”)

The queen gets all the perks, including gifts and treats from the fairies.

(The fairies’ industrial revolution involved the death of many to make one silk dress)

In return, she makes them sweets, which are distributed to all the island workers freely. It seems like a fair deal, and both sides are happy.

(Freedom rights for all! The next queen should be made from sweets!)

The fairies, in their research into plants for food, stumble across a plant that can produce sweets. Putting all their efforts into finding other candy-type strains of that plant, the fairies learn to grow food from the trees.

(Willy Wonka’s got nothing on this)

The mediator is out of her job of distributing sweets, but the fairies manage to function well without her. To commemorate their success, they build monuments, and naturally get carried away.

After covering every inch of the island with monuments, they’ve destroyed the plant and agriculture that they cultivated.

(“So the food was thrown away, to make monuments… huh..?”)

Days of rationing begin, and the Mediator begins to worry about running out of food and getting off this island. It rains for many days without stopping, which is realised as the gloom cloud created by the fairies’ mood.

(The rain would be drinkable, if it wasn’t salty fairy tears…)

Just when things are looking bleak, both the Mediator and the fairies are zapped off the island. She meets her grandfather and the Assistant, who have been looking for her.

(The fairies used the Mediator as a flotation device)

Overall, I’m glad that Jinrui‘s up to form with witty and zany antics. The episode covered the rise and fall of a fairy nation, but of course can be applied to today’s society of being too greedy, lazy and taking the cheap way out a lot of the time.

The episode also focused on the Mediator’s role as queen. She didn’t do much, but she did wear some nice dresses.

Rated – 3/5 Back to form with a fairy nation.
