Anime: Natsuyuki Rendezvous – Episode 8 Summary + Review

“Flowers flowers flowers… “

(Who knew florists could be afraid of flowers?)

Studio: Dogakobo

Genre: Romance, Paranormal, Josei, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, Rokka comes home to a arrangement of bouquets, which are the same as what Atsushi made for her on various occasions. She recognises them all.

Atsushi-as-Hazuki has disappeared, taking with him all of his stuff. Rokka is understandably upset by this, and wants to know what’s going on.

Atsushi gets a call from Rokka asking why he’s taken her husband’s stuff. Atsushi want to explain his behavior, but is afraid of letting go of Rokka, and of making Hazuki looks crazy.

(Atsushi answers annoying telemarketers calls)

Deciding to go after Atsushi-as-Hazuki, Rokka, asks Miho to looks after the shop. She doesn’t explain her behavior, and leaves Miho with many questions.

(Rokka looks for Hazuki after she realises that he’s alone and homeless)

The real Hazuki has lost the mermaid Rokka after her story has been played out. Tiny Rokka comes back to keep him company.

(“There’s no food here… and I haven’t eaten since I came to this world…”)

Atsushi is adding more pages to his sketchbook, which makes more stories for Hazuki.

(Shark doodles are very therapeutic)

Hazuki starts to ponder about his relationship with Rokka, and how Atsushi is closer to her than he could ever be.

(Tight roping through outer-space! Hazuki is strange…)

He slowly loses himself in his thoughts, and the tiny Rokka warns him that it’s dangerous to lose his consciousness sin memories, because he’ll never be able to return to his body.

Atsushi’s caused a similar grief to her, and Hazuki comforts the tiny Rokka that’s been trapped in the pages for a very long time.

(Tiny Rokka might want to move for the upcoming sneeze)

In the end, he launches himself into oblivion, determined to find his way back.

(Hazuki falls from a sea into oblivion… Fingers crossed it’s near his home)

Overall, the pacing of the series has really slowed down with the spreading of the cast. There seem to be only four main characters, and non-existent side-characters, so it’s a lonely process, for each of them when they move away.

Hazuki seems to dying of boredom in the fairytale-esque world, and that’s my take on it as well. It was interesting with the sketchbook garden, but the mermaid world was very cold and empty looking.

The next episode promises more proactive actions from all the characters, and I’m hoping that they will meet and hash out issues that have dragged.

Rated – 2.5/5 Limited progress. Atsushi’s running away with Rokka chasing him.
