Anime: Sword Art Online – Episode 8 Summary + Review

“Duel against my stalker!

(Kirito agrees to be Asuna’s boyfriend, so she can get rid of a creepy boy following her)

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre: Game, MMO, Fantasy, Sc-Fi, Age: 13+

Released: 6th July 2012 – onwards

From the previous episode, Kirito comes across a rare cooking ingredient. Initially wanting to sell it on, the inspiration of using Asuna, who has full cooking abilities, hits him. Asuna wants half of the meal.

Warning! May contain spoilers!

On the way to Asuna’s house, her escort Kuradeel, from her guild, is against inviting unknown people near Asuna.

After ordering him off, Asuna drags Kirito away.

(“Yeah, I’m totally with Kirito. He wears black…”)

They have a lovely meal, and discuss how people have stopped trying to escape this world. They have currently lived in Sword Art Online for two years, and there are people that lack the desperation to go back.

(The pair have a meal while Kuradeel watches through the window)

Pairing up as a party, they decide to explore some dungeons. Despite Asuna leaving the house early in the morning, it turns out that Kuradeel has been following her. More than that, he’s been watching her house over over a month!

Kirito challenges him to a duel, to end his actions.

(“Let’s fight for Asuna’s hand!”)

After a speedy duel, Kirito and Kuradeel both show off their power. Kirito eventually breaks Kuradeel’s sword.

(Everyone likes an underdog… but not a loser)

Kuradeel accuses Kirito of cheating somehow, saying that he can’t possibly be this strong. Asuna formally orders him away.

(Asuna’s hand goes to Kirito. Stalk off crusty-dude… )

Meanwhile, a hooded person in the audience is watching this.

(Asuna’s next stalker waits in the wings)

At the dungeon, Kirito admits that fighting is much easier when you have another person of equal strength.

(An army of creepy wanna-be boyfriends appears. Can’t kill them fast enough)

They come across a large door, which they know contains a tough boss monster.

(“Asuna, you know they die in the real world, right?”)

Deciding to take a quick peek inside, they come across The Gleam Eyes.

(The latest challenger in this Kirito-Asuna-Stalker triangle. Monsters can love too..!)

Overall, the two scenes, that appear in every lack-luster anime, appeared in Sword Art: the cooking scene, and the groping scene. Does anyone find them funny or entertaining?

I’m fine with the romance between Kirito and Asuna, however, “cooking” and then eating a virtual meal in an anime just drops the ball.

The second part of the episode, with the duel and the dungeon exploring, were much more interesting. The animation angles and action sequences are well animated, and the use of lighting should definitely be given credit.

The characters’ jaws were on the floor when The Gleam Eyes appeared. If he’s a powerful boss, then I want them to fight him asap.

Rated – 3.5/5 Great second half of episode. Kirito and Asuna are a great pair.
