Anime: Binbougami ga! – Episode 5 Summary + Review

“How to hold a gruge”

(I’ll let you in on a secret….. I’m actually a guy!)

Studio: Sunrise

Genre: Surreal, Drama, Fantasy, Comedy, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, using the Aging Box from the turtle god Urashima Taro, Momiji manages to turn Sakura into a child! It should be easy to steal Sakura’s fortune, when she’s not even waist high, but Sakura’s not going down without a fight.

This episode contains material not suitable for younger viewers!

After escaping from Momiji’s clutches, Sakura hides in the bushes of a local park. Mika, Keita’s younger sister (episode  3) sees her and wants to play.

Although they’ve met before, Mika doesn’t recognise Sakura. Well, no-one expects to meet a younger version of a person…

(Sakura’s big head is a problem in hide-and-seek)

On the way to Mika’s house, Sakura asks Bobby and Momou to help her get back to her own age. They’re willing to help, but are too giddy to be of much use.

(Praying to Momou doesn’t work… even with a pervy priest present!)

At Mika’s house, Sakura’s reintroduced to the family. The oldest sister is kind to “Michiko”, as Sakura has dubbed herself.

Sakura learns that she left a very bad impression of the family last time.

(Sakura wants to escape before the Tsuwabuki clan adopt her)

Momiji threatens to harm Urashima Taro if he doesn’t come up with two more Aging boxes. To eventually turn Sakura into a tired old lady, rather than a child.

(“Hello, this is Turtle… No, the TMNT’s number is…”)

Meanwhile, Sakura and Keita’s family got on a picnic.

Sakura’s having a nice time, but something about the happy atmosphere in the family irritates her. It only gets worse when she realises that Keita is protective of her.

(Keita suggests shaving her bald to shrink her head for hide-and-seek)

Running away from the family picnic, Sakura runs into Momiji in the forest. Sakura’s been cornered, and Momiji is looking pretty destructive.

They disappear together.

(Momiji has special place for Sakura’s head on the wall…)

Finding that “Michiko” hasn’t returned from earlier, Keita goes into the forest to find her, and ends up falling off a cliff.

(Keita learns he can fly if believes…)

With no-one there to help him, he’s pretty much stuck. The episode ends on a cliffhanger…

Overall,  great episode that finally moves from episodic content. Sakura gets more of a personality, and Keita’s family is shown more.

It’s still not clear if Binbougami ga! will move towards romance, but there were hints to it in this episode. Keita and Sakura seem like an obvious paring, but the opening and ending sequences make this seem like a Momiji and Sakura centered series.

Keita falls off a cliff.. he’ll get rescued. At some point, the family will realise that Michiko and Sakura are the same. It’s not the most original plot. Viewers can pretty much predict what will happen, but it’s a fun ride just watching these characters interact.

Rated – 3.5/5 Fun episode, stuffed with quirks and great conversations between characters.
