Anime: Sword Art Online – Episode 2 Summary + Review

“Beta Cheater…”

(Stand-up comedy in Sword Art had it’s own challenges..)

Studio: A-1 Pictures

Genre: Game, MMO, Fantasy, Sc-Fi, Age: 13+

Released: 6th July 2012 – onwards

Sword Art Online continues from the previous episode, by jumping forward a month. Two thousand players have died so far, resulting in their deaths in the real-world as well.

No-one can figure out how to complete the first level, and so a meeting has been called for the players to figure out their next action.

Warning! May contain spoilers!

Kirito considers himself a solo player in Sword Art. So when the meeting requires people to group into parties to fight the first-level boss, he finds himself quite alone. He approaches another loner and creates a party with just that person.

(Kirito tries to poke this stranger, but with no mutual friends, a poke back is looking unlikely)

Other people feel resentful that the beta testers abandoned the beginners when this game started, however Diabel plans on leading these parties to the next level.

(Diabel faces a tough crowd)

They make a start on the first boss and kill off the easier foes first.

(Resources get so tight in-game, that even old gum is valuable)

The actual boss turns out to be a pretty tough cookie. He seems to be quick, and powerful.

The players have just got him down to the last bar…

(The boss gets the pots and pans ready for dinner time!)

Suddenly, the boss’s attack pattern changes and he pull out a new sword: one that wasn’t in the beta test!

Diabel takes a hit as he tries to finish off the boss. Unfortunately he dies…

(Diabel’s war cry was considered very camp by all..)

Asuna, the mysterious person that was paired with Kirito, helps him finish off the boss.

(Kirito was amazed at the graphics: even Asuna’s dandruff looked pretty!)

Kirito gets the last hit, and along with it a special bonus item.

(All you had to do was pour water over the boss, and he melted!.)

The other players are angry that Diabel died. They want an explanation from Kirito that he knew how the boss would attack but he didn’t help out Diabel. Now they’re without their leader.

Kirito abandons the group, even Asuna, and leaves.

(“Don’t worry, you’ll see me in the future. Possibly as a love-interest.”)

Even though this game can’t be completed with just one person, he feels that he will be out by himself.

Overall, I found this episode to be a kind of drag compared to the first one. Unfortunately, it’s directed precisely how a game would play. As a TV audience, you don’t feel any of the rewards because it’s not your skill or effort. It’s like watching other people play.

I would love to play Sword Art if an actual game was made of it, but in an anime the challenge simply isn’t there.

Oh, and last episode was Klein: missing, now it’s Diabel: missing. It’s looking like, if you’re a charismatic character in Sword Art, then you’ll probably disappear off screen..

Rated – 2.5/5 Needs more time exploring the environment, not trying to emulate game boss battles in an anime..
