Anime: Natsuyuki Rendezvous – Episode 2 Summary + Review

“The previous shop owner was a ghost… and he’s still here!”

(Atsushi did not play conventional peek-a-boo)

Studio: Dogakobo

Genre: Romance, Paranormal, Josei, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, Hazuki’s struggling to follow up his confession last week, leaving Rokka feeling that something must have changed. Both are struggling to come to terms with their feelings and the future of the relationship.

Warning! May contain Spoilers!

It doesn’t help that Rokka’s husband, Atsushi, is still taunting Hazuki.

Every time Hazuki is near Rokka, Atsushi makes demented faces to distract him. Of course, Rokka can’t see her dead husband, so it’s impact is purely for Hazuki!

It leads to pretty funny stills…

(All this mushy stuff…)

To get Rokka away from the shop, and the ghost, Hazuki asks her out for dinner at some other cafe.

She agrees, and all three are surprised.

(Hazuki finds a secluded spot: an abandoned restaurant…?)

After a quiet dinner, Rokka actually feels affectionate for Hazuki, but after a sudden emotional outburst she scrambles away, telling Hazki not to follow her.

(Luckily this is faster than Kimi no Todoke)

After Hazuki still follows her… Rokka explains that she’s getting a bit carried away. He’s too young, she’s too old and burdened.. etc etc..

Atsushi is sitting between them, watching this somberly, like a tennis match.

(Atsushi floats between a inevitable couple..)

Hazuki still wants to kiss Rokka, but unfortunately, Atsushi is still at play. He gets in the way, and the sheer creepiness of the situation turns Hazuki away.

(This moment has been immortalised in fanfiction!)

Rokka is insulted that he might just be toying with her and kicks him out of her house. Feeling depressed, she falls asleep on the table, with Atsushi insistingly telling her that she’ll get ill if she doesn’t take better care of herself.

(Rokka puts her head down to for five…)

In the morning, Rokka is indeed stiff and ill. In her fevered conditions she collapses, while sending a message to the shop employees.

(Rokka pops some stiff joints: is she really that old?)

On getting an empty message, Hazuki runs to the shop. Atsushi tells him to hurry and help Rokka.

(Atsushi decides that life is too much and he must jump— oh wait…)

Rokka is now heavily fevered and bedridden, when the episode ends.

(Rokka showing her vulnerability…)

Overall, this episode is keeping the benchmark high. I found it to be an interesting insight to Atsushi’s dilemma; of being dead and not being able to help Rokka.

It’s quite clear that he cares for her, and wants her to be happy with Hazuki, but is still jealous enough to get in the way. He also has a childish side to him that we didn’t see in the flashbacks..

Rokka and Hazuki’s relationship develops quickly, but I think both are mature to handle their actions well. So far, a great Josei series.

Rated – 4/5 Good character building and interesting moments.
