Anime: Binbougami ga! – Episode 2 Summary + Review

“Catfights: Round Two!”

(Momiji’s soul-stealing staring contest was an early plan…)

Studio: Sunrise

Genre: Surreal, Drama, Fantasy, Comedy, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

From the last episode, Sakura’s happily getting on with her life until the goddess of misfortune transfers in. Momiji’s putting her cosplay skills to good use as a transfer student.

This episode contains material not suitable for younger viewers!

Sakura’s isn’t happy about this new student, who sits right next to her. She’s wary about her fortune being stolen.

(Sakura contemplates her next world takeover move)

However, Momiji is taking everything in her stride, and is enjoying school… or at least, enjoying taunting Sakura!

(Momiji’s going Pro! …For COSPLAY!)

Sakura pretty much had it with Momiji. On her way home, she runs across the “foreigner” who’s new in town and want to live with Sakura. After beating him up, Sakura leaves.

(Spoiler: he really a man possessed by a turtle spirit)

Momiji has made a home in Sakura’s cupboard, with brand new extensions, that includes a spaceship..

(Forget Narnia, Sakura’s wardrobe has it’s own outer-(inner?)-space! )

Fed up, Sakura realises that the foreign priest has followed her home.

His name is Bobby, and he says he knows a way to get rid of Momiji…!

To get rid of negative energy… you have to dress up a priestess, and he’s taken the courtesy of sewing Sakura’s costume for her..

(What did he say to convince you that was a Shrine Maiden costume?)

After a furious bout with Momiji, Sakura eventually uses her fortune to summon creatures of light.

(Attack of the cute and fluffy… watch out, they bite!)

Momiji counter-attacks by summoning creatures of the dead… but they’re too tired and lazy to do anything, and Momji faces another week outside the house.

(Poor zombies, they miss TV and fresh air… but maybe not the latter as much…)

Whilst Momiji plots her next plan to rid Sakura, the viewer finds out that she’s actually in a very pathetic situation.

(Teddy is scary enough to be a guard… or deterrant!)

Overall, this episode was funny, however it let me down slightly. In the last episode, Sakura’s butler and his side-arc made for a nice contrast between Sakura’s and Momiji’s battle. However, this episode was just empty without any other character. I don’t count “Bobby the priest” as a character because he’s kind of similar to Momiji and Sakura.

In the next episode’s preview, a new male character was promised. I’m not sure if it’s a love-interest for Sakura, or more comedic relief, but hopefully something dynamic will happen soon.

Rated – 2/5  Funny and still sharp, however it’s getting repetitive for even two episodes.
