Anime: Binbougami ga! – Episode 1 Summary + Review

“Misfortune vs MISS Fortune: The Catfights”

(Sakura contemplates her successful cosplay career)

Studio: Sunrise

Genre: Surreal, Drama, Fantasy, Comedy, Age: 13+

Released: July 1 2012 – onwards

Sakura Ichiko has way too much “fortune” for any normal person, with a hot body, good grades, good athletics and she’s only 16! Life looks great from her view, but Momiji, one of the Gods of Misfortune has been sent to extract some of it so she can become normal.

Quick content warning for younger viewers for this episode. It contains nudity, and several violent body-shots.

It may come as no surprise to anyone that Sakura likes her life the way it is, and no way is she going to become average.

(Momiji likes to get a closer look at all her victims)

Momiji confronts her in various situations getting more and more ridiculous as she copies ghost-horror style entrances.

Including coming out when Sakura bathing…

(Teddy’s too demented to cuddle, but Momiji doesn’t mind)

Eventually though Momiji explains why Sakura needs to get her fortune extracted: she’s harming other people by sucking it out of her surroundings!

(Guess where this goes..)

Momiji will even make it nice and gentle.. with a big fat NEEDLE!

(Overworked butler)

Eventually Sakura’s butler has a heart attack, and his dwindling fortune means that he won’t survive.

(This will extract some of the “blubber” too)

Sakura lets her guard down and has her fortune extracted by Momiji. But… that’s not the end of the tale..

(Traffic’s so bad, Sakura takes the sewers)

She steals the massive jar and runs off to the hospital.

After a hilarious escapade combining many black cats and cat-plosion, the fortune is dropped where it’s desperately needed.

(Don’t worry Sakura, we’ll have a better cake next year)

Sakura’s butler survives and… she fires him. He deserves to live a life away from Sakura.

Overall, I was wondering how they were going to carry on this story when it’s only got one gimmick, of having the fortune extracted. Turns out that Sakura is so lucky that her fortune grows back, so it must be extracted every week.

I initially wanted to watch this series because of Momiji; her character design is so quirky and she’s an interesting character. I like demented characters in anime (Sawako from Kimi no Todoke, Sunako from The Wallflower).

The others characters were also interesting, and the episode ending was surprisingly touching. I think it bodes well for this series.

Rated – 2.5/5  Slapstick comedy makes it funny, but hopefully it gets some depth in the future too. Worth watching, if only for the funny cat-fights.

See the next episode!

  1. This was zany, alright. I thought it was reasonably funny, though.
